General

Eye health and vision are predisposed to living habits, smoking, illnesses and hazardous sunlight. Aging, as early as since 40 years of age, impairs not only the eye sight but also has degenerative effects on the macula in the retina. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the Western countries. The eye health is highly promoted by healthy living habits, a diet rich in vegetables and coloured fruits and regular sight tests by an optician.

In Sini Silmä, the protective substances for the eye and vision are antocyanins from bilberry, lutein, zinc, selenium, vitamin E and beta carotene. Antocyanins are considered to improve the vision by strengthening fragile capillaries and increasing the capillary circulation in the retina.

Lutein is a major constituent of the macular pigment ("yellow spot") in the retina of the human eye. The sharpest vision occurs in the macula. High dietary intake of lutein helps to maintain the lutein content in the macula. Lutein also protects the eyes as serving as a filter of blue light of the sun. The dietary sources of lutein as well as beta carotene are dark green, leafy vegetables.

Beta carotene is changed to vitamin A in the body by tissue needs. Vitamin A is essential in the process of night vision. Zinc, selenium and vitamin E function as antioxidants defending the retina from hazardous free radicals caused by smoking and environmental pollutants.

Sini Silmä is recommended for the aged, smokers, computer users, and persons with strained or light sensitive eyes.
